Young Institute programs train the talent of tomorrow

This Purdue certificate (16 credits) is open to undergraduates interested in careers in the pharmaceutical industry, especially within the manufacturing and supply-chain sectors. The certificate is designed to supplement a variety of majors. Students who attain this certificate will be well positioned for successful careers in the global pharmaceutical industry.

Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue are offering a combined associate of science degree in engineering from Ivy Tech and a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Purdue. Green2Gold classes will be held in closely knit groups called cohorts. Students will stay with their cohort throughout the program, providing a built-in support network.

Offered at the Purdue Indianapolis campus starting in fall 2024, this program addresses the emerging challenges of pharmaceutical production with special emphasis on the purification, formulation and administration of active pharmaceutical products and the development of novel healthcare engineering approaches. Courses provide the skills to design and develop pharmaceutical products and modern manufacturing processes, as well as to communicate, negotiate, and lead within global pharmaceutical enterprises.

A key aspect of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry is oversight of production to ensure safety and quality. Purdue’s master’s in biotechnology innovation and regulatory science (BIRS) focuses on drug development, quality management and regulatory compliance. The pace of the program is flexible, allowing students to balance professional and personal commitments.

Lilly Scholars receive a scholarship for up to eight semesters of tuition with a guaranteed internship opportunity at Eli Lilly and Company and interaction with company leaders. The Lilly Scholars program encourages applications from students from under-resourced urban and rural populations who have overcome socioeconomic or educational disadvantages or who are among the first generation in their family to attend college.

Ireland is well known for its pharmaceutical manufacturing, and a study-abroad opportunity during spring break takes advantage of that expertise and the country’s cultural richness. The Young Institute operates the program with the Irish National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Technology.

BioTrain graduate fellows attract and train top-notch talent on future pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies and develop training programs for industry. BioTrain also includes curriculum development for a pharmaceutical manufacturing certificate and a collaboration with Ivy Tech Community College.

Purdue University will host the Summer Undergraduate Pharmaceutical Experiential Readiness (SUPER) Program, a paid one-week training experience for undergraduates in summer 2025. Headquartered in downtown Indianapolis, the SUPER Program offers rare hands-on training that bridges academic learning with real-world application and unparalleled exposure to the intricacies of pharmaceutical manufacturing. This program is funded in part by the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL).

Major tech development near Lebanon

Eli Lilly and Company has announced a $3.7 billion investment in new manufacturing facilities within the LEAP Innovation Park near Lebanon, Indiana, southeast of Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. This will add up to 700 new jobs – the kinds of jobs that the Young Institute is helping prepare Purdue students to fill.
